By no means is it an original idea but one of the troubles that come with lionizing is that instead of having models whose virtues we aim to emulate, too often we have created icons whose examples we admire but have no means to replicate. This is disastrous. None of the great people who strove for the progress we inherited did the work only to be venerated. When we let awe get the best of us, we stagnate the work.
I think often of the “great cloud of witnesses” described in Hebrews 11. The champions of faith listed in that chapter are listed for the intention of encouraging us to keep going through faith. Just as it is dangerous to do this work without studying the examples of those who came before us, it is also catastrophic to wholeheartedly view their examples as unattainable and disqualify yourself.
Resistance to wickedness is our inheritance.
